About

Birkenhead Museum is a small community museum dedicated to sharing the stories of Birkenhead and Northcote. Through photographs, artefacts and personal histories, the museum brings local history to life and helps preserve it for future generations.

Birkenhead Museum is administered by the Birkenhead Heritage Society, a group of passionate volunteers committed to protecting and sharing our area's heritage. Founded in 1979, the Society works to acknowledge, treasure and celebrate the history of Birkenhead and Northcote while engaging the community in preserving its stories for future generations.

Little. Local. Loved.

The Birkenhead Heritage Society logo draws on traditional heritage colours - the cream of parchment paper and deep velvet maroon, representing the rich fabric of our history. Blue and green reference the harbour and surrounding bush that are such important parts of Birkenhead’s landscape and heritage.

The stylised “B” incorporates several key elements of Birkenhead’s story. The ferry represents the vessels that connected Birkenhead to Auckland long before the harbour bridge. The strawberries recall the strawberry farms that once flourished in the area, while the houses reflect the many historic homes that still stand proudly in the community today.

Flora within the design acknowledges the area's significant bush coverage, and the koru wave recognises both the harbour and the deep Māori history of the area.

Birkenhead Museum is located in Farrington House, a beautifully restored historic villa on Mahara Avenue.

We are fortunate that this special home was gifted to the Society by a generous local family, allowing it to become the home of our museum and the place where Birkenhead’s stories are preserved and shared with the community.
